Artist: Henry Lau
Album: “Trap” EP
Label: SM Entertainment
Year: 2013
Intro
After being part of Super Junior-M for a number of years, Henry Lau finally gets his break to do a solo project as he wasn’t part of regular Super Junior. It’s his chance to break out on his own to be the star. It was his shot to show that he’s more than a member of a Chinese sub-unit of a Korean boy band.
Good
Despite breaking out on his own, it was great to have his SM Entertainment labelmates show him love by appearing on the album including Kyuhyun, Taemin, and Misfit who has worked with various other SM artists on creating music.
The music is surprising pleasant. One of the surprising tracks that I happened to enjoy outside of the singles was “Holiday” with it’s fun and early to mid 2000s vibe. “Ready 2 Love” is his shot to have that anthem expressing love that feels like it would be filled with hype if it were to be performed live.
This album was released in both Chinese and Korean with one song, “I Would” being an English release. “I Would” might actually be the most beautiful song on this album.
Bad
This EP has three versions of the titled single with the other two versions featuring labelmates Kyuhyun from Super Junior and Taemin from SHINee each while the other hit single, “1-4-3 (I Love You” only had the original. It didn’t include the rerecording with Amber of f(x).
Overview
It’s pretty disappointing not to have the re-release of “1-4-3 (I Love You)” because that song was the song that drew me into his music as a solo artist. It was also special to see him perform that song live that year.
Outside of that, it was really a great listen. I feel that he has earned the opportunities to be a soloist especially at Super Show events where he would get more chances to perform.
