A first is a series I like to call “Top 5 Friday.” Today we’ll be talking about my Top 5 favorite episodes from Star Trek: The Original Series. So! Lets not waste anymore time and get this list started!
5. The Trouble with Tribbles
This is a classic episode and one that I go back to from time to time. It’s just a lot of fun. From space furbies to bar fights to the surprise ending, this is a light hearted which everyone could enjoy. A good follow-up to this episode is Deep Space 9’s episode “Trials and Tribble-ations” but we’ll talk about that next time. ^_^
4. The Naked Time
It’s getting crazy on the Starship Enterprise as the crew is afflicted with a toxin that strips them of their inhibitions and hijinx follows. Spock begins crying for his mom after getting hit on by Nurse Chapel, Kirk ‘loves’ his ship, but the best part of all is Sulu shirtless and running around with a fencing sword challenging everyone to a duel. It’s just an hour of fun. Scotty being able to say ‘I can’t change the laws of physics!’ is definitely a contender for the Top 5 lines from the Engineer.
3. Mirror, Mirror
I love alternate reality episodes. I like them more when they are actually good, as this episode is. A transporter malfunction sends Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura to an alternate dimension where the Federation is now the Empire, ruling with an Iron Fist! The crew members must deal with the evil Spock, now with a goatee! To make matters worse, the evil versions are also teleported to the good Enterprise causing havoc. Moral of the story: Goatee equals Evil.
2. Amok Time
Who doesn’t want to watch an episode all about a horny Spock looking for some action? He only gets horny every 7 years, so it’s kind of a big deal. Kirk takes the Enterprise over to the Vulcan Homeworld for Spock to marry T’Pring, but she turns out to be a bitch and makes it so that if Kirk and Spock do not battle to the death, they will kill them both. AND enter the famous battle between these 2 with a notable reference in ‘Cable Guy.’
1. The City on the Edge of Forever
This is hands down my favorite episode from The Original Series. Right from the moment I saw McCoy’s swift double judo chop to the transporter tech, I knew I was in for an amazing episode. This episode involves time travel back to the United States in the mid 20th century. McCoy is crazy from a self injection and finds himself jumping into a time portal. Kirk and Spock must locate him to prevent any time altering disaster. It’s a well written episode, and the first episode I would show to someone new to the series.
So thats it! This is my Top 5 Episodes from Star Trek TOS. Before anyone gets all angry that I didn’t include an episode, let me just say that this is my opinion and I only had 5 spots! Let us know what your Top 5 is in the comments below.
