Nor Cal Regionals 2015

On April 3rd-5th, the annual Nor Cal Regionals returned to the Holiday Inn in Sacramento, CA.  This time I opted to actually stay at the venue as opposed to the previous year where I stayed far away from the hotel.

This is the second time I competed at this event. I competed in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. I was looking to crack another top 3 in any game like the previous year when I made top 8 in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate.  This year I wanted to show that I wasn’t a fluke.

This also marked the second year in a row where NCR is a stop during the Capcom Pro Tour.  Once again, the winner of this event would get an automatic qualifier into Capcom Cup at the end of the year.

In both DOA5LR and UMvC3, I went 0-2.  In DOA5LR, I played my first game on stream and didn’t do too well, but I wasn’t too mad at myself since I had to play Marvel right before and was using a pad for the first time at a major.  In Marvel, I went 0-2 and had to play Nerd Josh who uses Chris G’s team of Morrigan/Dr. Doom/Vergil, but I got to show him some things from Morrigan that he never knew.

Surprisingly, I did pretty well in Super Turbo considering I had guys like Ultracombo and Snake Eyez in the tournament.  Although the tournament wasn’t streamed, I felt like it was my best chance to succeed.  I lost my first match and ended up clawing my way through losers only to lose outside of top 8.  I ended up in 9th place.

Other fun activities included getting a hands on experience with Tekken 7.  It was freaking awesome to try it out with all the new move properties and different mechanics. The line was pretty long, but it was so worth it to play the game before a lot of players got to try their hand at the 3D franchise.

This tournament was one of my favorite ones due to getting closer with the Nor Cal fighting game community and making new friends.  Making a few dollars with some wagers also helped make it a wonderful experience.
