Album: “Square One”
Label: YG Entertainment
I was deciding on what artists to invest into because so many artists come out with projects every week especially groups are debuting. It is really hard to keep up especially since some of my favorite groups had already disbanded, lost members due to leaving or military, or just weren’t putting out any projects.
I was skeptical when I was given the recommendation of Blackpink because my heart was still with 2NE1, and I was told that they were the next 2NE1. I wasn’t ready to allow that to happen yet, but I realize that the investment wasn’t too big. I realized that some of the members had already appeared on previous projects like in music videos and songs. I at least had that familiarity with them already.
“Square One” came equipped with two hit singles. They were “Whistle” and “Boombayah”. Both songs were dope because they did borrow from early 2NE1 with the more urbanized sound along with R&B. Anyone that’s a fan of hip-hop and R&B would love these song offerings. “Whistle” was cool because it actually had whistling while “Boombayah” definitely had a hardcore party vibe to it.
Well, it’s easy to tell that they are supposed to be the next generation of 2NE1. A lot of people have not accepted that, and the fact that they are a four member group with similar sounds doesn’t help. I’m sure over the course of their careers, they’ll distance themselves from 2NE1, but at least for this debut, the comparisons are there.
I think Blackpink does have a promising career because they make quality songs and have a strong support system behind them in YG Entertainment. As 2NE1 disbands, the members of Big Bang having to go to military service, and PSY getting older, it’ll be up to Blackpink to carry the torch for the YG name.
