Red Velvet’s “Summer Magic” EP review

Red-Velvet5

Artist: Red Velvet
Album: “Summer Magic” EP
Label: SM Entertainment
Year: 2018

Intro

2018 was a very busy year for the girls of Red Velvet with four releases in the calendar year. “Summer Magic” was their third release of the year with the very catchy hit summer single, “Power Up”. Obviously, with quality releases one after another, there has to be a let down at some point, right?

Good

Even though “Power Up” was the lead single, the two songs that really amazed me were “With You” and “Blue Lemonade” due to their R&B vibes. “Blue Lemonade” definitely has a R&B pop sound like with a tad sprinkle of bubblegum while “With You” definitely has a more traditional R&B sound with but more pop and that Red Velvet flavor.

“Power Up” has a summer vibe going on. It also has somewhat of an 8-bit video game sound like those classic NES games. It’s a song that can easily get people addicted to the song. It’s a song that’s perfect for the time frame.

This album also comes with the inclusion of the English version of “Bad Boy” which really helps their international appeal. It was easily warranted since the girls of Red Velvet debuted this version of this smash hit at KCON NY 2018.

Bad

This track really doesn’t qualify as a song and isn’t included in the physical copy, but it’s “Red Radio” which is only available in the digital release of “Summer Magic”. It’s an 11 minute track recapping the album but in English which also caters to the English speaking fans. It’s one of those tracks that you could skip since it’s not an actual song, but thank goodness it’s at the end of the album.

The rest of the album includes “Mr. E”, “Mosquito”, and “Hit That Drum”. “Mr. E” sounds like a light drum heavy with some animal bass in it. “Hit That Drum” was an aggressive jungle type song. These songs helped diversify the album, but it’s a hit or miss. In this case, for me, it’s a slight miss, but understand why others would really like these songs.

Overview

Outside of that 11 minute track, this album is definitely all ears as you take a ride through the feelings of summer whether you just want to chill with the R&B style songs, feel that summer hit with “Power Up”, or just go crazy with the other b-sides. This album gives you the feels of summer whether you’re currently in season or trying to reminisce. It’s a journey through possibly the most popular season of the year.
