“Allez, Eddy” (2012 Belgian movie) review

I decided to watch this movie because I had heard it was a nice family movie and that it was a foreign film.  The foreign film part intrigued me because it was my goal to watch more international movies at Cinequest 2013.

Freddy is an 11 year old kid who suddenly becomes fascinated by the world of competitive cycling after seeing his idol, Eddy Merckx race.  He wants to become a racer after a supermarket runs a small racing competition for aspiring racers.  Unfortunately, Freddy’s father is a huge opponent of the new supermarket as he runs his own independent butcher shop nearby.  The family now has to try to adapt to new times and not live in the past.

It was a decent movie for the family.  It was quite enjoyable especially since I’m a huge fan of sports related movies.  I rarely see any movies from Belgium unless it includes Jean Claude Van Damm.  I never see movies about cycling so it was like a breath of fresh air to me.

Although it is a family movie, there is a nude scene in it.  In France and Belgium, nudity is a bit more acceptable.  In the United States, it is not especially for family themed movies.

It did kind of lag for me at times.  I did get pretty sleepy during the course of the movie due to the dragged out scenes.  It was alright nonetheless.

Overall rating: 3/5
