On November 18th to 20th, 2016, Kraken Con returned for their biannual event at the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland, CA this time for the fall edition. What made this event different is that it expanded from two days to three giving it a full weekend. What worried me is if they would have enough programming to fill up all three days. A lot of mid level conventions and even major ones even have trouble having programming. I guess we’ll just have to see.
Unfortunately, that was the only major upgrade from the previous editions. I’d say the best highlights were actually the gaming. It rained a lot so people did have to stay indoors which caused everyone to either loiter around the convention, chill in their hotel rooms, or scatter elsewhere. There were more tournaments this time around than before with prizes better than what other cons actually offer.
Sadly, there were no panels or workshops that really stood out to me, but I did have some personal highlights in the video gaming department. I came in first place in the King of Fighters XIV tournament, second place in the tournament for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, and tied for second place in the Weiss Schwarz tournament for the Sunday portion.
Although this con did not stand on it’s own as a con, I actually had a blast primarily due to just enjoying myself. What transpired after this con is that it was the final year that Kraken Con would be a biannual event. Instead now, it will branch off with just one Kraken Con a year and a brand new comic con called Hydra Comic Con.
