Nor Cal Regionals 2017

On April 14th-16th, 2017, Nor Cal Regionals returned to Downtown Sacramento at the Holiday Inn. Once again, NCR became a stop in the Capcom Pro Tour for Street Fighter V and featured other titles in the lineup like Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Tekken 7: Fated Retribution, King of Fighters XIV, Pokken Tournament, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. There were also community ran tournaments such as Ultra Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, UNIEL, BlazBlue: Central Fiction, Darkstalkers 3, Skullgirls, Guilty Gear XRD Revelator, and Killer Instinct.

This tournament had players from all around the world vying to move up the rankings in the CPT standings. Players came from all around California, East Coast, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and China. They also wanted a piece of that pot bonus that was added to total.

I personally entered five tournaments which included Street Fighter V, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Tekken 7, King of Fighters XIV, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo. I entered a lot of games to get ready for EVO later in the year.

One of the special moments occurred in the Tekken 7 tournament. It marked the reemergence of Bronson Tran who is one of the old school Tekken players. He made a one time major appearance to run the tournament and to play in it. He had to run two brackets at the same time, compete, make sure everything ran smoothly, and to make jokes at the same time. Eventually, he ended up in top four only to be mic’d up to commentate his own matches.

One of the bigger rivalries was in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. It was between NYChrisG and RyanLV to see who was the current best in the world in this game along with who had the best Morrigan team. These two guys have been the alpha males in this game each taking home titles during the past year.

The last notable thing was the rise of Punk. He was a pretty good player that did really good against domestic players. In this tournament, he rose to the occasion and was able to defeat some of the world’s best including the defending Capcom Cup champion.

I won’t go into full results of who won what tournament, but this experience was my favorite NCR yet because I created brand new wonderful memories with friends. Although I didn’t make any top eights, I felt like I did well. I had a blast and look forward to 2018.
