On August 25th-27th, 2017, MAGFest expanded their annual event from the DMV area to the West Coast called “MAGWEST” to the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara, CA. For those that aren’t familiar with this event, it’s a convention and festival to celebrate “music and gaming” hence the name MAGFest.

To be honest, a lot of the programming did not appeal to me. I did not care for the guests, the music performances, or the panels. I did try to attend some of it, but it wasn’t my cup of tea.

The highlight of this event was the gaming room. The gaming room was a 24 hour place for those to get some games in. There were arcade cabinets that were set on free play. You had classic retro games all the way to the current consoles with the present hits. There were also various tournaments from speed runs to one on one games.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of their venue. The gaming room was located away on the first floor down a few halls from the panel rooms which was on the second floor. It was quite a journey just to get from point A to point B. The venue was also located away from a lot of the food options. If one to want food, they either had to stay at the hotel or venture a little bit out of their way which is hard for anyone that didn’t have a vehicle. Nothing was around this venue and this is the area where the San Francisco 49ers call home.

Unfortunately, this event ran at exactly the same time as Crunchyroll Expo who just happened to also run their inaugural event next door at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The good thing is that some were able to attend both events, but at a limited capacity. Those with a MAGWEST badge could only go to the dealer’s room at CRX while those with a CRX badge could only enter the gaming room. Realistically, a lot of people could only afford just one badge especially the out of towners which made it hard to choose one or the other.

I honestly enjoyed this event more than Crunchyroll Expo primarily because of the 24 hour gaming hall. I feel that had these two events fused into one, it would have been a much better event especially if they were running their events at the same time. Other than that, they should really try scheduling their events on different dates.
