Love Live! School Idol Project (2013 anime) review

Series: Love Live! School Idol Project
Studio: Sunrise
Year: 2013

How did I get trapped into extreme “waifu laifu”? How did I become obsessed with this anime series? What started all this?

It all started with a video game I played called Dead or Alive 5: Last Round. There was going to be a new character which caused a lot of hype throughout social media. They said the character was based off of the anime, Love Live. That character ended up being Honoka. That got me curious, so I ended up checking the anime.

After finding out that her school was closing due to a lack of applicants for the next school year, Honoka Kosaka wants to find a way to prevent her school from closing. When Honoka saw that school idols were very popular, she recruited her best friends, Kotori Minami and Umi Sonoda to create their own school idol group to raise awareness and to boost applicants. Along the way, they gain new members and go through hardships in being school idols. Their end goal is to perform on the big stage known as Love Live.

I really love that there’s positivity in each of the episodes. The songs are so catchy and each of the characters are lovable in each way. You can’t go wrong with picking any character as your favorite as each of them possess a quality that attracts you to them. There were a lot of lessons to pick up such as staying positive, the power of teamwork, friendship, and hope.

I could see why certain people may not like the series due to an overdose of cuteness or didn’t find a character to gravitate towards. Potentially, the songs weren’t for them or something. I could see the lack of a main antagonist as something to add on why one might not enjoy the series like I did.

Never in my life would I ever expect another anime series to rival Sailor Moon as my favorite. Ever since I personally got into this series, I have been more than obsessed in many ways like collecting merchandise, attending special events, spending valuable time playing the School Idol Festival game on my iPhone, becoming a competitive Weiss Schwarz player, and cosplaying characters from the series. Let’s just say that it has changed my life.
