Trouble Maker’s “Chemistry” EP review

Artist: Trouble Maker
Album: “Chemistry” EP
Label: Cube Entertainment
Year: 2013

I recently went through my iTunes list to listen to music that I may have forgotten I had and came across this EP. I decided to give it a listen to reminisce about the good times Cube Entertainment had prior to 2016 when 4Minute was still a group and Hyunseung was still a member of Beast. I didn’t actually recall purchasing this second effort of the duo known as Trouble Maker. I wanted to make sure I didn’t overlook potential treasures.

“Now” is a real good track where it really showcases the “chemistry” between the duo. Hyunseung’s singing along with Hyuna’s rapping show that they have potential to have success should they stick with this concept down the road. His singing especially during the chorus covers up for Hyuna’s weakness. I’d say the track that stood out the most for me overall would be the first track called “Volume Up”.

There’s a reason why I had this album for three years and kept it dormant in my plays on car rides to places. There are good tracks but not enough for me to want to listen to it. Realistically, if I want to listen to Hyuna, I’d listen to 4Minute or her solo work and same for Hyunseung with Beast. It’s a good listen. It’s not a great listen.

While it’s not a classic by all means, it’s a pretty solid extended play. Hyunseung and Hyuna work pretty well together and have contrasting voices. The songs won’t blow you away, but they are pretty listenable. I gave it the score I gave it because I felt that it’s above average but not quite enough to keep it in the rotation of consistent listens.

Overall rating: 3/5
